Day Seven - Copenhagen to Oslo
I like vacations with multimodal transportation, so when I first heard about an overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo, it sounded a lot more interesting than a long train ride up the Swedish coast. It’s also very convenient, leaving Copenhagen after 4:00 pm and arriving in Oslo around 10 the next morning. This ship with multiple restaurants, cabins ranging from simple to very comfortable with private lounge and deck areas, far exceeded my image of a ferry. Dinner and breakfast buffets were good and we slept well, even when the sea got a little rough overnight, but the best thing was having deck access right outside our cabin door.
Day Eight - Oslo
I chose the Comfort Hotel™ Xpress Central Station primarily for its location, near the ferry terminal and the central train station since Steve and I both had early morning departures. It was comfortable and large; the first of two mobility accessible rooms on my trip.
After we dropped our bags off at the hotel, we walked a few blocks to the Opera House, an architectural landmark that allows you to walk up the roof to a spectacular view of the fjord.
As we walked around the Opera House to the Munch Museum, we were able to look into the opera’s scenic shops that had huge windows to the street.
The Munch Museum is Europe’s largest museum dedicated to the work of a single artist. The architecture provokes strong reactions, and the museum includes displays that help us understand the anxiety around mental health in the Munch family, and the children’s fear of what they might have inherited.
Oslo’s excellent public transportation system of buses, trams, trains and ferry made it easy get around the city. Dinner was away from the city center at Bistro Budapest in the Mathallen Food Court. Waiting for the bus back into town, I saw some unexpected graffiti. The evening ended with a walk by the Oslo Cathedral where they are building an interesting retail area with restaurants and shops that will integrate into the cathedral’s grounds and building.
